About this work

Also known as

Previous title: Black Album unlabelled

Description

The album contains a mixture of 241 photographs, process prints and postcards depicting classical sculptures and paintings of Greek and Roman mythological figures and images inspired by classical ideals of the male body. This includes ethnographic and sicilian photographs by Von Gloeden and Von Pluschow, and photographs of athletes, acrobats, boxers, wrestlers and strongmen, ca. 1890-1930. The album ends with explictly homoerotic nude images including some pornographic images.

Some of the records contain a description provided by James Gardiner which may include his own interpretation or further contextual information on the image and its subjects. Many of the postcards include inscribed dedications on the front and some also contain messages on the reverse.
