The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "After a major success in the 1927 film 'Sunrise' directed by F.W. Murnau, the Irish-American actor George O'Brien became one of the first 'beefcake' movie stars, marketed as such by the studios, appearing semi-nude and flexing his muscles in a variety of macho roles."
