Photograph of the amateur athlete Laurence Woodford posed nude leaning forward and balanced on a plank of wood. He is side-on to the viewer. The popularity of physical culture developed rapidly after the first professional bodybuilder, the Hungarian Eugen Sandow, first appeared in New York and London and as a music-hall turn in the 1890s billed as 'The world's strongest man'.
