The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Commercially-produced silver-gelatin print in postcard format by Wilhelm von Gloeden. Von Gloeden's photographs of naked Sicilian youths posed in quasi-Roman garb found a wide audience, and by the end of the 1890s were being reproduced in large numbers by publishers, principally in Germany."
