Notes

The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "The mythological Roman figure of the faun, sometimes half man and half goat, has long been associated with gay sex, and has been a favourite subject with gay artists throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from the photographer Frederick Holland-Day, to perhaps the most famous artistic representation of this figure by Nijinski, in his 1912 ballet 'L'après-midi d'un faune'. Perhaps the best known version from the classical age, the so-called 'Barberini Faun ', was discovered in the mausoleum of the 'gay' Emperor Hadrian".
This work is untitled: the title has been supplied by the cataloguer.
