About this work

Description

This series of notebooks contain the personal jottings of William Cooper, founder of the Coopers business (which later existed under the names William Cooper & Nephews Ltd; Cooper McDougall & Robertson Ltd). They relate to many aspects of the Coopers business, recording formulae, developments in the production of dips and other products, sales, etc.

Although the author of all of the notebooks is assumed to have been William Cooper, it is possible, and indeed likely, that others have written in them also (Cooper died in 1885).

Arrangement

The Cooper notebooks numbers 1-11 have been numbered in accordance with the red numbers which have been fixed inside the front covers of each volume. This is not necessarily in chronological order - original order has been maintained.

Notebook no. 7 is missing, and was noted as missing on the original lists received from GSK at the time of the acquisition of this collection. It is assumed that it has been missing for a considerable period of time.

The notebooks have been catalogued here, rather than with sales records or R&D records, because they form an obvious and distinctly personal chronicle of the development of the business.
