About this work

Description

This notebook contains numbered pages 1-294 with a couple of unnumbered blank pages at the end. Not all the numbered pages have been used, and the following are blank: pp. 1-5, p. 89, pp. 104-106, pp. 115-264, and pp. 273 onwards.

The pages of the notebook have 'Analyses C P D [Cooper's Powdered Dip]' written on the side. The spine of the volume incorrectly dates the start of it as 5 Oct 1888.

The notebook contains details of scientific chemical analysis of the Cooper's Dip product, taken at intervals from different parts of the Berkhamsted factory, and also occasionally from abroad. Note is made of what was found in the sample of dip taken. It is assumed that these notes were used for quality control purposes. Sometimes other notes about individual samples or circumstances surrounding them or their analyses appear alongside the details of what was found. On occasion the name of the chemist who did the analysis is given along with the results.

Loose sketches of unidentifiable objects are in between pp. 59-60 and in between pp. 109-110.

A summary of the analysis of samples (1886-1902) is given on pp. 265-270. This includes the name of the chemical analyst, the results expressed in terms of the percentage of certain chemicals found, page number and (sometimes) remarks.

pp. 74-75 have been cut from the volume.

Arrangement

This volume is considered to be a continuation of the Cooper Notebooks series, and therefore has been catalogued here rather than, for example, with the Coopers Technical Bureau records. It is not clear which member of the Cooper family (if any) actually wrote in this particular volume.
