Notebook No. 2

Contains numbered pages 1-79 then 30-59 (there are two sets of pp. 30-59), not all of which have been used, eg. the second pp. 38 onwards are blank. Page numbers 30-37 are suffixed 1st or 2nd below, to indicate which occurrence of the pages is referred to.

Some entries have been crossed through, either with pencil or ink. Some entries appear to have had text appended to them. Note at front of book to say that everything crossed out in red has been inserted in 'the book of 1882'.

ENTRIES AS FOLLOWS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS NOTEBOOK:

p. 1 'Dipping Powder 1866' - includes details of production of dips, raw materials, sales (including for 1866 by month on p. 10, for 1867 by month on p. 16, for all years 1856-1881 on p. 17), dip recipe, use (eg. p. 27 - 'Hot water poured on the dip causes it to curdle and sink which cold water does not')

p. 33 (1st) 'Our New Dresser' [sic] 1868 - includes notes on production, quantities of materials used, factory details (eg. p.39 'It takes 3 men a day at least to ... clean up the mill room. Damp saw dust is best for cleaning ...'), sales (sales for 1868 by month on p. 41, for 1869 on p. 53, for 1870 on p. 59, for 1871 on p. 61, for 1872 on p. 67, for 1873 on p. 75, for 1874 on p. 79, for 1875 on p. 31 (2nd), for 1876 on p. 33 (2nd), for 1877 on p. 35 (2nd), for 1878 on p. 37 (2nd)), costs of materials, 'temperature of kilns Nov 23-[18]71' (p. 63). p. 62, p. 64, p. 74 and p. 78 are blank.

On pp. 68-69 there are notes of a census of sheep, horses and cattle in the UK (dated 1872) - and it is noted that the number of sheep in the UK (31,403,500) about equalled the human population.

Enclosed in the book are two sheep dip recipes taken from notebook of W Wilson, Veterinary Surgeon articled to William Cooper, and annotated by J A Hill, Company Secretary of Cooper McDougall & Robertson Ltd, to say that they had come from Charles Timson, 23 Oct 1922.

A label has been fixed to the front of the notebook, for 'Cooper's Sheep Dipping Powder: The Best Known Means of Destroying all the Ticks' - 'Prepared only by the Original Inventor, William Cooper MRCVS, Chemist, Berkhamsted'.
