About this work

Description

MRC's Committee on Protection Against Ionizing Radiations (PIRC, or the MRC Protection Committee) was established in 1951 and chaired by Mayneord. It was set up in accordance with the provisions of the Radioactive Substances Act (1948). The Panel was established under the recommendation of the International Protection Commission, who felt that the field was too wide to be covered solely by the Committee on the Medical and Biological Applications of Nuclear Physics. Subcommittees covered topics including High Energy Radiation; External Radiation; and Internal Radiation, as well as a number of working groups and panels. The High Energy Radiation Subcommittee was chaired by Mayneord; External Radiation chaired by J F Loutit; Internal Radiation chaired by J S Mitchell.

Includes correspondence, minutes, circulated papers and reports from PIRC meetings, as well as from PIRC subcommittees and groups, including the Subcommittee on Permissable Levels; Radiobiology Forum Subcommittee; Panel on Stable Elements in Food; Advisory Panel of the Registry of Persons Exposed to Ionizing Radiations; and the Special Reviewing Group: Radioactive Isotopes. Papers relating to various PIRC subcommittees can also be found in the general papers of PIRC, under the reference PP/WVM/B/2/2/1.
