Biographical note

The MRC Advisory Panel of the Registry of Persons Exposed to Ionizing Radiations was established in 1957 and chaired by Dr W M Court Brown. It explored possible ways of defining and setting up population groups of luminizers and industrial radiographers and monitoring the health and radiation exposure of luminizers and ex-luminizers. The panel was concerned with establishing a registry of persons exposed to ionizing radiations, which would include changes in the pattern of morbidity and mortality in populations exposed to known levels of radiation, both from external and internal sources. The aim of the registry was to confirm the validity of permissable maximal exposure levels to ionizing radiations by comparing the causes of and ages at death of exposed populations with control populations.
