Biographical note

The Panel on Stable Elements in Food was established in 1964 as a subcommittee of the MRC Committee on Protection against Ionizing Radiations (PIRC). It was set up as an advisory body to aid the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in investigations of stable elements in food, by considering the maximum permissable concentrations of radioactive contamination of food. The panel was chaired by Dr Scott Russell. Its task was to consider whether laboratory investigations should be encouraged to obtain fuller information on the levels of stable elements in food to assist with assessing the significance of dietary contamination.
