Description

13 artworks by a man identified by Rita Simon's pseudonym "John,"' some of which are featured by Rita Simon in her book, The Symbolism of Style. John is referred to in depth on pp118-125 and pp134-137. Rita Simon noted that artwork 5 is missing from the sequence. The descriptions of the artworks are taken from information in Rita Simon's books and from notes written by Wellcome staff during conversations with Rita Simon between 1995 and 1997.

Rita Simon worked with "John" during two separate times in his illness. The first paintings tended to feature figures in landscapes, sometimes with an anxious or angry tone. The second phase of paintings were primarily landscapes without figures.
