About this work

Description

Two artworks by Tuberculosis Patient 1 - "John." The recto shows two figures painted in a naive manner, both with moustaches and beards, which Rita Simon describes as being the result of his inability to give a three-dimensional effect to the faces. The verso shows three figures in watercolour and three heads in pencil; these may have been partly created by Rita Simon as a means of demonstrating how to gain a more three-dimensional effect to faces.

On the verso of the sheet, there is a list written in pencil which appears to appraise some of the features of the painting, possibly written by Rita Simon. There is also a note written by Rita Simon in biro which says, "John's tuition sheet, colour by RMS."

This artwork was numbered '2' in Rita Simon's sequence.

The artwork on the recto is reproduced in The Symbolism of Style Plate 7.2 and is discussed in detail by Rita Simon on page 119.

The title has been taken from the caption used in The Symbolism of Style.

Rita Simon classified this artwork as Archaic Massive.
