Biographical note
Sports activities formed a large part of recreational life at Crichton Royal Hospital for both staff and patients. Some of the early sporting activities in the nineteenth century included bowling, croquet, cricket, tennis and football and in later years also included swimming, squash, gymnastics, curling and hockey. Patients were encouraged to engage in sports and staff members formed various sporting clubs and were involved in fixtures against other teams.
