Biographical note

Golf is first noted as being played at Crichton Royal Institution in 1884, with a golfing competition being held on 'Crichton Green'. The hospital paid a donation to other established golf courses in Dumfries to allow use by patients. A nine-hole course was laid in the grounds of the hospital in 1900 and in 1906 work started on another course between Crichton Hall and Maryfield, which remained in use until 1970. In 1970, with the building of the new Dumfries Infirmary, the golf course was moved to Bankend Road and was officially opened on 12 April.
