Biographical note
Football matches were played on Crichton Royal Hospital's playing field by the hospital's own team against local teams and teams from other hospitals, and by visiting teams playing in charity matches. In 1947 a Crichton Royal Hospital staff member, W. Houliston, was selected to play for the Scottish national team.
In 1959 a hospital League of Friends was established to organise and extend existing voluntary activities. A public meeting was held and a group was formed, with further meetings held to establish a constitution and elect a committee, which included hospital representatives. The activities of the League of Friends included individual patient visiting, organising bus trips, fundraising and assisting with patient's having a summer holiday.
