The International Journal of Epidemioligy (IJE), published from 1972, was preceded by the Bulletin, produced as a founding aim of the organisation (then the ICC) to "facilitate communication throughout the world among those engaged in the resarch, teaching and application of epidemiology." Membership of the ICC included a subscription to the Bulletin, published twice a year, to which members were expected to contribute a short article. The first joint editors of the Bulletin were John Pemberton (UK) and Harold Willard (USA), the founders of the Association.

The Bulletin was published from January 1955 to 1971, when the decision to establish a quarterly Journal was approved at the 6th ISM held in Yugoslavia, September 1971. The Council wanted the new Journal to provide a link between members by publishing Association news, and to publish original articles in the field of epidemiology, some of which were papers given at the International and Regional meetings.

The first issue of the IJE was produced in Spring, 1972 and its first editors were Drs. W. W. Holland, F. Schofield, W. Downs and C. Florey. Membership of the IEA included a subscription at a reduced rate; the Journal was also used to communicate membership and organisational updates, IEA history, Consitution and By-Laws.
