Biographical note

Savage received her training in obstetrics and gynaecology prior to the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act, and therefore was trained to believe that it was, in her own words, inherently wrong. She began to question her training after spending several years in Africa where she saw the dangers of women risking death to rid themselves of unwanted pregnancy. She initially worked for the Pregnancy Advisory Service, first as a counselling doctor and then as a gynaecologist, both advising patients and administering abortions. Later she worked as a pro-choice advocate with various organisations.
