About this work

Description

In 1957, the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations was contacted by Banstead Hospital (Established 1877 as the Middlesex County Lunatic Asylum) to conduct a field study of the hospital's systems, structure and organisation. The study was conducted by Isabel Menzies Lyth and Geoffrey J Hutton over the course of nine months, with further discussions over the following nine months. An emphasis was placed on the governmental or management aspects of the hospital structure, considering the hospital as an organised system of tasks performed by the staff in relation to the patients.
