About this work

Description

Various items, gathered by A N Falder (for a proposed history of Burroughs Wellcome & Co), including several original documents, as follows:

April, 1877. Extract from American Journal of Pharmacy, pp. 192-9. Includes a list of examination questions and candidates recommended for the Degree of Graduate in Pharmacy, in which Burroughs appears (p. 196).

[c.1880]. Signed and witnessed note (date not completed) from Burroughs appointing Wellcome "as my proxy to vote...at the General Meeting of the [Kepler Malt Extract] Company...."

22 November, 1882. Sydney. Small hand-written note, signed by Burroughs, authorising Sudlow to sign company cheques in the absence of Burroughs or Wellcome.

10 August, 1889. The Standard, Vol. VI, No. 6. New York. A single news-sheet, folded, that leads on an account by Henry George of the opening of Phoenix Mills, Dartford - "thus was a factory opened in England that ought to have been opened in New York." [Fragile]

25 October, 1892. Circular letter (as a photocopy) from S M Burroughs to accompany souvenir photographs of Switzerland. In final paragraph, Burroughs refers to being "glad to divide a uniform percentage of the annual net profits as a bonus" to employees. For a framed example, with the letter set into the back of the frame, see WF/E/02/03/07.

1893-95. Material from The Chemist & Druggist, including BW&Co advertisements, obituary, and S M Burroughs, "An Enlightened Policy in Morocco," (28 January, 1893), pp. 105-7.

1894. Three original communications from Burroughs:
13 February, [189]4. Atlantic Cable Message, sent from New York to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, advising "Sailed Gallia".
26 May, 1894, sent from Coblenz to Collett Smith, verso the copy text of two letters from the City Liberal Club enquiring if Burroughs is to stand for Parliament.
1 August, 1894, to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, on the distribution of Henry George's "Protection or Free Trade" pamphlet - "these books will do more good if distributed to Clubs and Workmen's Institutes than if given to doctors who seldom have time to study economic questions."

[6 February 1895]. Telegram from Burrough's sister, Mrs Riggs, in Monte Carlo, to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, informing of her brother's death: "Mr Burroughs died last night."

6 February, 1895. Copy letter (wet process) from Wellcome to Mrs Riggs, expressing his condolences.

1895. "Schedule of papers &c considered of special value or referring to monetary transactions of Mr Burroughs and deposited by him in the Firm's safe." Two manuscript documents, both in tabular form, with the same title [7 sheets folded, plus 5 sheets folded].

15 August, 1907. John Morgan Richards to (Brother) Sudlow, enclosing typescript copy of pp. 76-7 from his With John Bull and Jonathan, which refer to the author's first meeting with Burroughs.

9 November, 1907. "Notes taken from Mr Clark," beginning: "When Mr B came over first he occupied a portion of J Morgan Richards' office in Southampton St." [3 sheet, in pencil]

1929. Obituary for Joseph Collett Smith. Typed extract from the Pharmaceutical Journal (23 March, 1929). Date typed copy was made not indicated.

1941. Letter [3 sheets] from J W Toplis addressed to "Dear Old Friend" which recounts some of the early history of the firm ("I remember how proud I felt when I managed to get a sheen on what are now termed pearl coated pills"). Also by Toplis, "More Historical Notes" on Burroughs Wellcome & Co "as requested by Mr Beattie." [Typescript, 4 sheets]

1975. Letter from Arthur N Cogger to A A Gray, referring to "the book on which Mr Falder was engaged," and enclosing a Burroughs Mermorial collection card (for which, see WF/E/02/02/25). With brief reply from Gray.
