About this work

Description

Reminiscence of Burroughs, with signature of A E Warden (Wellcome Foundation Secretariat, 50 years company service, 1892-1942, responsible for trademark and patent matters). Typescript, stamped 12 November 1940.

Warden states that his "purpose in this note is to recall matters not generally known which throw some light upon [Burroughs's] character" (p. 1). The account emphasises Burroughs's generosity, and includes a note of him taking Warden and other staff members to "the Canterbury Music Hall one Saturday to hear Stanley's lecture on Africa."

Examples cited of Burroughs's generosity include "twenty barrels of apples to be distributed - 'An apple a day' to everyone in Works Wharf and Offices" (p. 1). "Twenty barrels" were, however, six barrels - see Burroughs to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, 3 October, 1883 (WF/E/02/01/01/86).
