An appeal to the people of England, in defence of the clergy, against the charge, contained in Mr. Robert Seagrave's letter address'd to the publick. Wherein his two material articles are largely considered, First, The Method of obtaining Heaven; and Secondly, Man's Power in himself, or not Power, to be Virtuous. Under which Head, His Doctrine of supernatural Assistance is fully expos'd. - His Notions of natural Religion, are prov'd to be subversive of all revealed Religion. - And Calvinism demonstrated to be one apparent Cause of Deism, or an hindrance to the reception and spread of Christianity. To which is prefix'd, an epistle dedicatory, to the English clergy.

A plan for the establishment of charity-houses for exposed or deserted women and girls, and for penitent prostitutes. Observations concerning the Foundling-Hospital, shewing the ill consequences of giving public support thereto. Considerations relating to the poor and th poor's-laws of England; Wherein the great Increases of Unemployed Poor, and of Thieves and Prostitutes, are shewn to be immediately owing to the Severity, as well as the Defects of our Poor's - Laws; and to be primarily caused by the Monopolizing of Farms, and the Indosure of Common Lands; which have likewise decreased the Number of People, and brought our Woollen Manufacturies into a precarious State, as is made appear by Extracts from several Laws and other Authorities. Also, a New System of Policy, Most humbly proposed, for Relieving, Employing, and Ordering the Poor of England; Whereby a great Saving may be made in the Charge of Maintaining Them; the Poor's - Rates be kept nearly Equal in all Parishes, as in Equity they ought to be; and every Pretence for wandering about Begging, be taken away. To which are annexed, Forms of the principal Accounts necessary to be kept for those Purposes, whereby such Persons as are not conversant in Accounting will easily be able to comprehend all that is here proposed on that Head. To which is prefixed, the natural history of that animal, from the most eminent Natural Historians-a Disquisition on Rumination and Digestion-on the Circulation of the Animal Fluids; from Dr. Munro, Fourcroy, and others. There is also a particular description given of an elastic tube, invented by Dr. Munro, with the method of using it for the immediate relief of swellings occasioned by eating Wet Clover-by Fogsickness, or Poisons. To the whole is added, an appendix, Containing many remarks and observations, on the Murrain, Gargle, or Pestilential Fever, made by eminent Physicians, at different times, when that Disorder raged in England, &c.
