What brought you to our website today?

One of a series of chromolitho trade cards issued to advertise Dr. Grosvenor's Liveraid, which was supposed to "cure any case of constipation, biliousness, headache, liver complaint, dyspepsia, indigestion, malaria, rheumatism or any other diseases springing from a deranged liver or stomach" and Bellanodyne pain relieving plasters. The illustration shows 3 ducklings (1 yellow, 2 brown) chasing 2 frogs into a pond with trees and a sunny sky behind them and a spray of water lilies and meadowsweet tucked through a card advertising the product. "Copyrighted 1879 by Bufford, Boston".

Late victorian chromolitho trade card advertising Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills and Lydia E. Pinkham's Blood Purifier. The card is one of a series. This one shows a water mill in the snow by moonlight, mostly in pale blue. The Compound was supposed to cure ovarian troubles, inflammation, ulceration, falling and displacement of the womb... and is particularly adapted to the change of life... faintness, flatulency, destroys all cravings for stimulants... bloating, headaches, nervous prostration, general debility, depression and indigestion. The liver pills (laxative) cured constipation, biliousness and torpidity of the liver. The Blood purifier was supposed to cure scrofula, rheumatism, cancerous humour, erysipelas, canker, salt rheum and skin diseases, all of which were due to "impurities of the blood".

Includes: Hungary-Water Warehouse (Ludgate Hill, London, 1733) and the great Chymical Elixir (asthma and consumption, 1733), Treble-distilled Lavender Water (Henry Christian, Canterbury, 1813) with Dr. Hooper's Female Pills (Newbery and Sons, on the back), Austen's Forset Flower Cologne (1889), Hoyt's German Cologne, Murray & Lanman's Florida Water, Bloomsbury Hair (London, 2009).

Advertising trade card for Halls Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer and Buckingham's Dye for the Whiskers in dark brown and sepia. A colour version of this was also issued (Ephemera collection, EPH154:5). It shows a young woman with a mass of long hair wearing a long dress sitting on the grass, surrounded by attendant cherubs, one holding an oval mirror for her to see her face and 2 white rabbits. A further cherub is bringing a cartload of the hair renewer, flying though the sky, drawn by 2 doves, another in front is heralding the arrival with a horn.

Halls Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer : prevents gray hairs and baldness / R.P. Hall & Co.

Leaflet printed in black and red on thin, white card advertising prints, posters and pictures on sale at Pierrefort, 12 rue Bonaparte, Paris. It features a handcoloured illustration of a lobster rising up from the plate it has been served on to seize the nose of the man who has begun to cut into it for his dinner. Chair and wine bottle are both falling over in the struggle. It is signed with a monogram combining an A and a W.

Chromolitho trade card issued by Dr. M.D. Dennis to advertise his Dr. Dennis' System Renovator and Blood Purifying Syrup which was supposed to cure: dyspepsia, fever, ague (malaria), chronic affections of the liver, kidneys and spine, rheumatism, haemorrhoids, syphilis, fever sores, mercurial and glandular diseases and menstrual disorders (diseases peculiar to females) as well as purifying the blood. Dr. Dennis' Anti-Bilious Sugar-Coated Pills and Dr. Dennis' Catarrh Remedy are also mentioned. The illustration shows a woman in full-length summer dress with a large bonnet standing in a country setting, a pink path with a turnstile leading up to a red-roofed house on a hill behind her.

Chromolitho trade card with gold border which was probably issued in the late 1890s advertising Fer Bravais which was supposed to cure anaemia, scrofulous diathesis, atonic diarrhoea, diabetes, nervous exhaustion, emaciation. A poster by Adolph L. Willette was issued in 1898 to advertise the same product in France. The card shows a girl in a yellow dress, a boy in a blue sailor suit and a dog under a large, red umbrella sheltering from the rain. There are holly leaves and berries, a snowball and a pine tree with snow on it in the foreground making it look like a Christmas card.

One of a series of six cards with a theme of views along the Trans- Siberian Railway, advertising Liebig's beef extract. Printed in Italian, it has a small illustration of the jar with the manufacturer as being Liebig's Extract of Meat Company, London.
