Biographical note

The first ISM of the International Corresponding Club (ICC, re-named the IEA in 1959) took place at the Hotel Nordzee, in Noorwijk, the Netherlands, in 1957, supported by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. ICC members facilitating the programme sessions included Dr. Alice Stewart, Dr. Richard Doll, Dr. Archie Cochrane, Prof. Robert Cruikshank. There were 58 participants representing 44 university departments from 20 countries at this meeting.

At this meeting a constitution was formulated, an Executive Committee elected and the first Business Meeting for members was held on 6 September, establishing the three year administrative cycle of the organisation.
