Biographical note

The aims of the IEA (to facilitate communication between epidemiologists and researchers in this field internationally, and to encourage the development and use of epidemiological methods in medical research, teaching and practice) were to be achieved in part by holding international meetings, to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and current knowledge on epidemiology, particulary as applied to health planning and health problems in developing countries.

The International Scientific Meetings (ISM) take place every 3 years in different parts of the world, and are organised around a current 'theme' relating to epidemiology, which may also reflect global issues in health care.

The ISM also occasion the triennial IEA Council and EC elections and change of Officers, and General Business Meeting for members.

To cover the financial costs of organising international meetings, the IEA initially relied on support from foundations, individuals and governments, and to enable IEA members from developing countries specifically to participate.
