Biographical note
John Pemberton (1913 - 2010) co-founder, IEA and first archivist, 1977-1987. Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine, Queen's University, Belfast, 1958-1976.
Founded the IEA with Dr. Harold Willard (Cornell University, USA) in 1954 as the British section of the International Corresponding Club (ICC), Preventive and Social Medicine; also founded the Society of Social Medicine (UK) in 1956 and the All-Ireland Social Medicine Meeting in 1967.
Positions held in IEA:
Joint editor, with Harold Willard, of first Bulletin (later theIJE).
Vice-Chairman/EC member 1964-1968.
Chairman 1968-1971.
Council member (Past Chairman) 1971-1974.
In September 2007, the annual scientific meeting for the Society of Social Medicine (SSM) was held jointly with the European section of the IEA at University College Cork, Ireland as the 50th Anniversary of the first meetings of both the IEA ( September 1957, the Netherlands) and the SSM (September 1957, UK). In recognition of John Pemberton's role in the foundation of both societies, the SSM established the annual John Pemberton Lecture; the inaugural lecture was presented by Professor Jørn Olsen, IEA President.
Died 7 February, 2010 aged 97 years.
