Biographical note

Initially a study group established to facilitate communication and research between clinicians working in the field of epidemiology around the world, membership of the Association in its early years was open to those who supported its aims and had made original contributions to knowledge in this area of social and preventive medicine. Members were elected by the Executive Committee after consideration of their CV and publications, and were expected to contribute a short article to the Bulletin, published twice a year. Membership dues included subscription to the Bulletin, and later, theInternational Journal of Epidemiology (IJE)

By 1977, nominations for membership were reviewed and members elected by a Membership Committee appointed by Council, which also determined annual membership dues. Categories of membership are Ordinary Members, Senior Members and Honorary Members (IEA Constitution and By-Laws, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3).

As the membership and educational activities of the organisation increased, the work and role of the Membership Committee and Secretariat expanded. The major responsibilities of the Secretary are:

  • Maintenance of accurate record of members names and current addresses;
  • Production of Membership Directory and other lists of members;
  • Providing information to members and acting as a link between them and the Council and the Executive Committee;
  • Keeping Council informed of the activities of the Executive Committee;
  • Production of the 'Newsletter' for members;
  • Preparing agendas for and producing minutes of Council and Executive Committee meetings.

    By 1990, membership was expanded to national associations or groups of individuals from countries with a very low GDP, in order to share membership dues between those practitioners and support their participation in Regional and International meetings, seminars and workshops.
