Biographical note

Richard Robert Madden was a surgeon, writer and magistrate. He studied medicine in Paris, Naples, and London and practised for a short time in Mayfair, London. In 1833 he went to Jamaica as a magistrate of the Slavery Commission; he was superintendent of liberated Africans and judge arbitrator in the mixed court of commission at Havana 1836-1840, and was then engaged in similar work in West Africa. He was elected F.R.C.S. in 1855 (see the Dictionary of National Biography).
