Description

Madden, active much of his life in the problems of slavery, published this piece, revised and extended, as the prefatory poem (at pp. 9-19) to his Poems by a slave in the island of Cuba, recently liberated (&c.), London: T. Ward, 1840, together with much ancillary material on slavery in Cuba and a translation of the autobiography of the slave, Juan Francisco Manzano (1797-1854).

Signed and dated 5 December 1838. Produced in Havana.
