Bundles I-III comprise Chapters 1, 7, 8 of a continuance of the author's Phantasmata, or illusions and fanaticisms (2 vols. London, 1857). A note by the author's son, Dr. Thomas More Madden [1838-1902] on the first page of Chapter 1 states that these chapters were `intended for a third volume, unpublished, of 'Phantasmata'. Chapter 1 deals with the 'Analogies between ancient magic and the phaenomena of modern necromancy of spirit-rapping.' Chapters 7 and 8 relate to 'Artificial Somnambulism and other phaenomena ascribed to Mesmerism and animal magnetism.' Written mostly on various sheets of 8vo. note-paper, with newspaper cuttings, etc. (321 ll.).

Bundle IV: Appendix: 'The "Death Trance" or power of suspending animation claimed by natives of India.' Written mostly on the rectos only on 8vo. and folio sheets (33 ll.).

Bundle V: Newspaper cuttings relating to mesmerism, clairvoyance, witchcraft, etc. (32 ll.).
