Biographical note

A major focus of ICM collaboration with WHO and UNICEF is the Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI), a global programme initiated at the International Conference on Safe Motherhoodin Nairobi, 1987. This conference was organised jointly by the World Bank, WHO and the UN Fund for Population Activities, and concluded with a 'call to action' for midwives to take positive action to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, in line with Millenium Development Goals.

This programme of activities included conferences and Workshops, focusing on Regional and country surveys, research and training to support and implement SMI goals. The first of the ICM/WHO/UNICEF collaborative pre-Congress workshops took place in The Hague, August 1987, prior to the ICM 21st International Congress; the first sub-regional Workshop was held in Ghana, January 1989.
