Biographical note
Safe Motherhood Conference, 10-13 February 1987, held in Nairobi, Kenya. This initiated the Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI), and underpinned ICM policy and practice, in collaboration with FIGO, WHO and UNICEF.
Background papers and meetings to the SMI, including the WHO 'Action Statement' (1987) re. Safe Motherhood and the role and contribution of midwives in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity (WHO/MCH/87.5); and the SMI Report of the First Meeting of the Steering Committee, WHO Division of Family Health, Geneva, July 1987.
