About this work

Description

Albums containing Wellcome Trust corporate photography negatives, transparencies, contact sheets and occasional prints. The albums are arranged by shoot number and span C0000001 to C0012901, with the 'C' prefix indicating the corporate photography collection. The albums were created during the period in which the Wellcome photographers shot on film and discontinued when the department switched to digital photography c.2000. There are some gaps in the albums where material was extracted for internal use and was not replaced. The albums in WT/B/12/2 relate to the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus (now the Wellcome Genome Campus) at Hinxton. These albums were created separately to the main series of albums and contain duplicates of, and original material extracted from, the main series of albums (WT/B/12/1).

Shoot references are comprised of the 'C' prefix followed by the shoot number, which is always seven digits, e.g. C0000001. Shoot references are appended with letters for each sheet, and then digits for individual frame numbers, e.g. im C0000001A01, '1' is the shoot number, 'A' is the sheet, and '01' is the frame number.

The albums include photographers' annotations and original captions created by the Medical Photographic Library (MPL) (later Wellcome Images). They capture a broad range of activities, events and people relating to the work and interests of the Wellcome Trust across the 1990s to the early 2000s. Amongst the subjects depicted in the shoots are Wellcome staff; Wellcome-funded researchers, activities and outputs; the Wellcome Centre for Medical Science and its constituent parts including the "Science for Life" permanent exhibition, the Information Service and the Policy Unit (PRISM); exteriors, interiors and the development of Wellcome Trust premises, including the Wellcome Building at 183 Euston Road and the Gibbs Building at 215 Euston Road; staff, facilities and activities at the Sanger Centre and the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus; exhibitions and Wellcome's collections; history of medicine seminars; public engagement activities; Wellcome's Science on Stage and Screen and Sci-Art initiatives; activities to support science education and international funded facilities.

Individual descriptions for shoots have been provided in the item (i.e. album)-level records. These are based on original cataloguing data produced by the MPL. All images in a shoot were given the same description and cataloguing metadata. There are some gaps in the descriptions where data did not export from the department's last cataloguing system - the MIRO Medical Picture Library application - which was decommissioned in November 2017. Original captions are included in printed form in the albums.

Biographical note

Corporate photography was one of the main services of the Medical Photographic Library (MPL). The photographers documented activities, events and people relating to the work and interests of the Wellcome Trust at onsite, offsite and international locations. The images they captured were catalogued by the MPL and made available for internal use, including in Wellcome publications such as Wellcome News and annual reports and reviews. Today, corporate photography continues to be carried out by Wellcome's in-house photography team.
