Biographical note

In 1888 there was a considerable rise in the number of admissions to Crichton Royal Institution, the largest number to date. This was in part due to an increase in admissions of rate-aided patients from out with the region, specifically from the Glasgow area, during the building of three new asylums at Gartloch, Hawkhead and Hartwood.
