Description

There are two registers for Southern Counties Asylum/Second House, 1858-1905, one for Crichton Royal Institution, 1858-1884 and two for Crichton Royal Institution after the amalgamation of Crichton Royal Institution and Southern Counties Asylum, 1884-1982. The registers contain the number in the General Register, patient name, sex, class (i.e. private or pauper and from 5 July 1948 Section 3/4/5), date of last admission, date of discharge, length of stay, name of person who authorised the discharge or removal, condition on discharge or removal (e.g. recovered), place to which patient was sent, person to whose care patient was sent and observations. Volumes are arranged with the two volumes for Southern Counties Asylum first, followed by the volume for Crichton Royal Institution and then the two volumes for the whole Institution. Covering dates relate to the date of discharge or removal.

Sections 3, 4, and 5 refer to Sections of the National Health Service, with Section 3 being patients receiving free treatment and Sections 4 and 5 being fee paying patients at various rates.
