Biographical note

Louis Jean Marie Daubenton (1715-1800), naturalist, was the son of Jean Daubenton (1669-1736) and the younger brother of Pierre Daubenton (1703-1776). Pierre Daubenton's son Georges Louis Daubenton (1739-1785) was the godson of the naturalist Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788). Jean Daubenton, the naturalist's father, had a brother named Louis Daubenton; the naturalist married Louis Daubenton's daughter Marguerite (i.e., his own cousin). Louis Daubenton also had a son Edmé Louis Daubenton (1730-1785), who was known as "Daubenton le jeune".
