Biographical note
The Association was founded at the 1948 CSP Congress by twelve physiotherapists under the name of "Obstetric Physiotherapists' Association." The Association was to provide a forum for discussing physiotherapists' role in antenatal and postnatal care and to raise standards of training and education in the obstetrics field. They became increasingly involved in CSP affairs which led to a change of name to The Obstetric Physiotherapists' Association of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1957 and a successful application to become a Society Special Interest Group. The name was shortened to The Obstetric Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in 1961. On becoming more involved in the physiotherapeutic promotion of continence, the name was changed to The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1978. The name was changed to The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health in 1994 to reflect a move towards thinking holistically about "women's issues" i.e. "cradle to grave."
