About this work
Description
Signe was the wife of Folke Henschen (1881-1977), an anatomist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. They were close friends of the Vogts and were instrumental in enabling Marthe to keep in touch with her family in Neustadt during World War II. The parents in Germany would write coded letters to their scientific colleague and his wife in Sweden. Signe would then copy the letters and forward them to Marthe in Britain. They do not mention the names of family members, only 'father', 'mother', 'sister', as if Signe was writing about her own family. From 1941 onwards there are typed copies of Marthe's replies.
Most of the letters from Signe are in perfect French. Some are in broken German.
