About this work

Description

The Tavistock Institute Centre for Applied Social Research was given a grant by the Ministry of Health in 1966 to undertake social research into residential accommodation for the disabled. The research was undertaken in two phases. Firstly, the TIHR undertook intensive studies in homes providing long-term residential care for the disabled, with interviews, group discussion and observation methodologies being employed to explore the ways in which homes were organised, run and managed. Secondly, the action research approach was adopted in a smaller number of homes where changes were being enacted or contemplated and the TIHR worked with those involved to tackle and resolve any issues surfaced by such changes.
