Crick The Salk Institute Post Office Box 1809 San Diego, CA 92112 Dear Francis: I will be attending the AAAS meeting in San Francisco from January 3rd to the 9th and plan to be in La Jolla on the 10th, 11th, and 12th. This would give us an opportunity to review the status of the DNA book and hopefully to get a first draft recorded on my tape recorder. I am convinced that armed with your excellent outline, you could dictate a reasonable approximation to a first draft. Remember that the level is the same as that of a Christmas lecture or Friday evening discourse at the Royal Institution. My function would be to provide you with a listener who might interrupt you from time to time with naive questions and perhaps stop you when the story becomes too complicated. Once we have a transcript, you can ask someone to fill in the more detailed tabular material, boxes, etc. I hope you will agree to this relatively painless procedure and give me three or four hours of your time. If the 10th, 11th, and 12th are not possible, I could stay over on the 13th or I could come down from San Francisco on the 9th.
