About this work

Description

Two artworks by Tuberculosis patient 12 - "Joyce." The recto is of a fountain in the sea. On the verso is a watercolour of a house, made before the painting of the fountain. Joyce was inspired by a vision she had of a fountain in the sea, viewed through the bars of tall gates; this was the first painting she completed in full and was satisfied with.

Reproduced in The Symbolism of Style, Plate 14.

The description of the painting has been taken from Rita Simon's publication.

The title has been taken from the caption used in Rita Simon's publication.

Rita Simon classified the artwork on the recto as Massive Transition and the artwork on the verso as Traditional Linear.
