About this work

Description

From Oct 1939 to the mid-1940s Heatley was assistant to Professor Howard W Florey (who was collaborating with E B Chain) and worked with him mainly on penicillin and other antibiotics. He accompanied Florey to the USA and stayed there from Jul 1941 until the end of Jun 1942 (arriving back in England in July) . For the first six months he was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and worked at the Fermentation Division of the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the US Department of Agiculture, Peoria, Illinois (mainly with Dr A J Moyer). From mid-Dec 1941 he was an employee of Merck & Co Inc. at Rahway, New Jersey. (Florey had returned to England in October 1941 but continued to correspond with Heatley whilst he was in the USA).
