About this work
Description
These volumes contain the case notes of male and female patients, both private and pauper, admitted to the Crichton Royal Institution. After the patient details, which are displayed in most instances as answers to a series of between ten and twenty questions relating to the patient's history and condition, case note entries were generally made annually on 1 June during Dr W. A. F. Browne's period as Medical Superintendent, 1839-1857, and then each December before gradually become irregular.
When the Southern Counties Asylum opened in 1849 the case notes for pauper patients contained within these volumes were transferred into the Southern Counties Asylum Case Books, DGH1/5/21/2.
Case Book vol. 8, DGH1/5/21/1/8, contains case note entries brought forward from Case Book vol. 1, and the covering dates shown are those of the case note entries, not the patient admission dates.
