About this work

Description

Black and white clinical photographs of various conditions in female and male adults, children and infants, notably including jaw tumours, adamantinomata, fibro-osteoma, retinoblastoma, breast cancer, fibro-carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma/tumour, osteogenic carcinoma, neurofibromatosis, congenital deformities, syndactyly of hands and feet, epitheleomata, onchocerciasis, yaws, elephantiasis, madura foot, fungus infections, multiple herniae, thyro-glossal cyst, spontaneous gangrene, injuries due to accidents or caused by weapons, advanced osteomyelitis, malignant melanoma, buruli ulcer, thyroid tumours and conditions, multiple keloids, acute tropical ulcer. Also includes some photographs of two or more patients together, a picture of 18 feet of tapeworm removed from a small intestine, tray of round worms vomited by a patient.

Most of the photographs were probably taken in Uganda, though could also include other countries in Africa.

Many of the photographs are labelled individually (typed captions) or there is a text for each page with explanatory information, name of the condition, some case histories and how condition was treated.

Some images show surgical interventions, results after surgery (post operative pictures), removed tumours, fibroids and stones (calculi), and x-rays.

The images are undated but probably date from the 1950s to mid-1960s. The original album is labelled 'medical' on the spine.
