About this work

Description

The range of invitations declined is considerable: invitations to review books, inspire school students, participate in television and radio programmes, contribute to encyclopaedias, become a member of a Foundation, or join an editorial board, all in addition to a steady stream of conference opportunities.

Responding to an invitation from Sir Lawrence Bragg to give a Discourse at the Royal Institution, Crick wrote (25 March, 1963): "... I am overwhelmed with invitations to give talks and as far as I possibly can I am refusing them all, otherwise I should end up by talking in my sleep."

The correspondence is arranged chronologically, according to the date of the last letter in each exchange. Many correspondents received a ready-made reply card (PP/CRI/E/2/1).
