Following the cessation of central NHS funding for clinical audit in April 1994 the responsibility for driving clinical audit activity moved with commissioning health authorities who in turn made it clear that they expected to see clinical audit developed throughout professions as a means of demonstrating the clinical and cost effectiveness of services purchased on behalf of the public. In response, the CSP created the position of Audit Development Officer in September 1994 and the Clinical Audit Development Group in 1996.
