About this work

Description

The first entry in the volume is dated 8 May 1823, recording the opening of 'the repositories of the deceased James Crichton Esquire of Friars Carse', and contains the Trust Disposition and Deed of Settlement with Codicils added by James Crichton. This is followed by the Declaration of the Acceptance of the Trustees on 14 May 1823. The Trustees met for the first time on 13 June 1823, then at regular intervals. Minutes of their meetings detail the distribution of bequests and debts owed. Also included is a Copy of the Deed of Entail. The decisions surrounding the use of the charitable bequest are charted along with the details of establishing Crichton Royal Institution, including dealings with architect William Burn and various contractors relating to the building and furnishing of the hospital; the appointment of medical staff, discussion of their salaries and setting of rates of board for patients.
