Biographical note
Founded in 1988 as the Standing Committee of User Organizations for Pregnancy, Childbirth and New Developments in Reproductive Technology, this small voluntary organization evolved into an umbrella for other patient groups, pioneering patients' involvement in research agenda. It held public meetings and published a newsletter and produced guidance for investigators on how to write clear consent forms, and leaflets distributed in their thousands to potential participants in research explaining the expectations and their legal rights.
