About this work

Description

A mixed collection of images, consisting mainly of glass negatives, and some prints and transparencies.

The collection consists of advertising images for Burroughs Wellcome & Co (BW&Co) products and also historic images from Wellcome operational sites (such as Dartford and Beckenham). The images span almost the entire history of the Wellcome drug company, from the formation of Burroughs Wellcome & Co in the 1880s to the flotation of shares in the Wellcome Foundation in 1986. As such, WF/M/I/ND contains many interesting and important images pertaining to BW&Co and its history.

The images derive from the Photograph Studio / Library at the BW&Co Dartford site. This studio was predominately associated with Burroughs Wellcome & Co's Advertising Department. Therefore a lot of images were taken in connection with advertising - images of transport, exhibitions, medicine cases, people etc.

There are also a lot of images connected with Dartford and images of particular production processes (many of which would have been used in medical journals/ talks) and also images relating to social functions and staff.

Due to the loss of original order, the images have been grouped together by physical format and subject (eg Glass Negatives: Dartford).

The negatives have been removed from their original packaging and rehoused.
