About this work

Description

Laboratory notebooks covering the period that Heatley was located at St Johns College, Cambridge, 1933-1936.

From 1933 Heatley undertook post-graduate studies (biochemical research) at the Sir William Dunn Biochemical Institute, University of Cambridge, under Sir F G Hopkins and Dr J Needham. This research up to 1936 was funded by a grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and then the Benn W Levy Studentship.

Heatley's PhD thesis, produced during this time, was entitled "The application of microchemical methods to biological problems" (see series D/3 for copies of the thesis).

Note that the last notebook, A/1/8, mostly covers work carried out in Oxford 1943-1946, but the notebook was started in 1936 when he was at Cambridge.

These notebooks document the results and observations of Heatley's biochemical experiments, including calculations, graphs and drawings of apparatus.
